The Liberation of Holland
When: May 1945
Where: Holland (The Netherlands)
Events: Canadian troops had fought for a year and proved their worth by freeing Western Europe. They were given the job of liberating Holland from the NAZIS- a task which other Allied forces had previously been unable to accomplish. They were successful, driving the NAZIS out of Holland and then continuing on to Germany.
Canadian Significance: This was very significant to Canada, as Canadian Troops were the ones who carried out this battle. The Dutch people, who had been starving upon the Canadian arrival due to cut off supplies, saw the Canadians as heroes, even calling that season “The Canadian Summer.” This event created a friendly relationship between the Canadian and Dutch people, which exists even today.
